Security Guards and Security Companies have rules and requirements to follow under the Private Security and Investigative Services Act. All security employers and employees are required to abide by this Act. If security companies violate the act, they will be held accountable by the Ministry.

PSISB stands for Private Security and Investigative Services Branch. This agency ensures that security companies follow regulations and are in full compliance.

A security guard’s main objective is to observe and report in order to protect clients from injury, theft or otherwise. Beyond that, security guards may make citizen’s arrest under certain conditions. All actions undertaken by a licensed security guard will need to uphold the PSISA and Criminal Code of Canada.

Having security on-site will usually eliminate trespassers. Routine patrols on the job site from on-site security guards after hours can help to prevent or mitigate the risk of trespassers. Any trespassers caught may receive criminal charges for being on private property and if they cause damages, they will receive jail time for mischief under or above $5000.

It is highly recommended that you do not hire a security company or guards that are unlicensed. Companies operating without a proper license in Ontario are actually operating illegally, which puts you at high risk should any issues arise.

How can I ensure my security provider is operating legally?
In order to operate legally in Ontario, every security provider is responsible for obtaining and maintaining a license AND valid Commercial Insurance. In order to ensure that your provider is meeting these standards, you can request that your provider supply you with documentation of their license and insurance at any time for your records.

Why does it matter if my Security Provider is licensed?
In order to best protect Ontarians, a fully licensed security provider is obligated to undergo standardized training, criminal background checks and must continually meet government regulations in order to maintain their licensed status. Once licensed, the Ontario government monitors these providers through the Private Security and Investigative Services Act (PSISA) and can convict individuals who fail to uphold or violate the terms of this Act.
